Differentiating Depression, Borderline Personality and Bipolar Disorder: Strategies for Assessment and Intervention
Description
The recent increase in the diagnosis of bipolar disorder is viewed by some as simply the latest diagnostic fad, while others insist that it reflects better recognition of an illness previously misdiagnosed as depression, borderline personality, or ADHD. In this workshop, clinicians will learn a four-part diagnostic method for identifying adults, teens, and children with bipolar spectrum disorders and for differentiating them from those with other frequently diagnosed Axis I and II disorders. Participants will learn why, although widely used, antidepressant, Lamictal, and atypical antipsychotics should not form the foundation of treatment for those with bipolar disorder. Dr. Quinn will discuss psychotherapeutic tools derived from empirically-tested psychosocial treatments for bipolar disorder, psychodynamic studies on manic-depressive illness, and a family treatment approach to explosive kids that therapists can use the very next day to improve their patients' lives.
