Military Social Work: Practice Implications for Civilian Social Work Professionals
Description
Military social work is the provision of social work services to military personnel, veterans, their families and communities. This daylong workshop provides an overview of military social work with special emphasis on the Council on Social Work Education's advanced military social work competencies. Participants are introduced to the military deployment cycle, military organizations, and military culture, as well as to the association between psychological stigma and help-seeking behaviors in the context of military environments. Current research and practice knowledge regarding the resilience and post-deployment difficulties of returning military personnel and their families also will be highlighted. The session concludes with opportunities to discuss the personal narratives of returning Iraq and Afghanistan veterans as well as the future of military social work practice.
