Focus on Mathematics (FoM) is a unique partnership partially funded by the National Science Foundation dedicated to improving student achievement by increasing the mathematical rigor in middle and high schools. Our Partnership involves the school districts of Arlington, Chelsea, Lawrence, Waltham, and Watertown, serving almost 15,000 middle and high school students, and mathematicians from Boston University, University of Massachusetts Lowell, and Education Development Center. Our work strives to offer teachers solid content-based professional development, provide students with rigorous courses and curricula, and develop and support a cadre of mathematically expert teachers who will share their knowledge with teachers in their districts and students in their schools. Ultimately, Focus on Mathematics is building a community in which mathematicians, educators, and administrators work together with students to put rigorous mathematics at the core of their teaching and learning.
