BU PROFESSOR RECEIVES FULBRIGHT AWARD TO TEACH IN ICELAND
(Boston) – Karen Jacobs, Ed.D., OTR/L, CPE, FAOTA, clinical professor of occupational therapy at Boston University (BU) Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, was recently awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture at the University of Akureyri in Iceland during the 2005-2006 academic year.
Jacobs will teach with occupational therapy colleagues at the university in areas such as assistive technology, ergonomics, marketing, and professional development. She will also supervise occupational therapy students with their scholarly projects and plans to conduct a research project on health computing with university students.
“The spirit of the Fulbright complements well with my own goal of promoting global collaboration among health and rehabilitation professions,” said Jacobs. “I am delighted to work with colleagues in Iceland to continue on the path to reach this goal.”
Jacobs, an internationally recognized occupational therapist and board certified professional ergonomist who is well known for her work in ergonomics and health care marketing, is one of approximately 800 American faculty and professionals who will travel to 140 countries next year.
The Fulbright Program, America’s flagship international educational exchange activity, is sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and strives to build mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries. The program has been in existence for 58 years and over 265,000 individuals have participated in Fulbright exchange programs. Fulbright Scholar awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement and because they have demonstrated extraordinary leadership potential in their fields.
Jacobs has taught in BU Sargent College for more than 20 years and is a 1979 graduate of the College’s Master of Science program in occupational therapy. She currently resides at Boston University’s Warren Towers as a faculty-in-residence.
