National Public Radio Station Receives All-Time High of Seven Awards

(Boston) - Boston University today announced that WBUR-FM recently won seven Boston market awards from the Associated Press, setting an all-time high and topping last year’s haul of six awards.

WBUR was named News Station of the Year for the second consecutive year, while the station’s “Only a Game” received top honors for the third year in a row in the Sports Program category. The station also garnered awards for Continuing Coverage of the gay marriage debate; Enterprise Reporting for the “Inside Out” documentary unit’s “With This Ring,” a program produced by Sean Cole profiling sex abstinence; Special Events for their extensive coverage of the 2004 Democratic National Convention, and top Talk Show for “On Point.” In addition, WBUR’s noon news program “Here and Now” shared the award for top Newscast with WRKO.

“This is a marvelous testament to the dedication and hard work on the part of the entire news team at WBUR,” said Peter Fiedler, WBUR interim general manager. “I am very proud to be associated with such a talented group of individuals.”

The Associated Press awards add to a lengthy list of recognitions received by WBUR. The station has received more than 160 awards for excellence in journalism and quality of programming, including three Peabody Awards, the premiere radio and television quality and achievement awards; four “Major Armstrong” awards, which recognize leading FM broadcasters; more than 85 Associated Press and United Press International Awards, and more than 50 citations from organizations recognizing achievement in the areas of law and medical coverage, cultural understanding, women’s issues, investigative reporting, and radio production.

One of New England's leading sources of news and information, WBUR is owned and operated by Boston University and is a member station of National Public Radio. WBUR also broadcasts a selection of BBC programs and such locally produced programs as “The Connection,” “Here and Now,” “On Point,” “Only a Game,” and “Car Talk.”
