The scientists are studying the hot (30 million degree) gas using X-ray data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory. The team’s findings were first published in the August 20, 2011 issue of The Astrophysical Journal.

Called Lyman alpha emissions, the emissions are used as indicators of the formation of stars in galaxies shortly after the Big Bang. Their findings were published in the December 2, 2011 issue of the journal Science.
