The IEEE Photonics Society has appointed Professor Selim Ünlü (ECE) as the new Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, effective Jan. 1, 2011.
Published monthly by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers since 1965, the IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics (JQE) covers experimental or theoretical advances in quantum electronics, a domain of physics concerned with the effects of quantum mechanics on how electrons behave in matter and interact with photons. JQE defines the field as encompassing “the generation, propagation, detection and application of coherent electromagnetic radiation [in the optical spectrum].” Papers appearing in the journal describe major developments in the understanding of fundamental quantum electronics phenomena or demonstrate new devices, systems or applications.
“It is a great honor to be appointed to this prestigious post with the flagship journal of the Photonics Society,” said Ünlü. “I am looking forward to working with the associate editors—all prominent scientists from around the world—and the dedicated publications staff.”
The Photonics Society focuses on the research, development, design, manufacture, and applications of materials, devices and systems that are expanding the field of quantum electronics and applications.
“Selim Ünlü has made important contributions to the field of photonics and has been a dedicated leader in the IEEE Photonics Society,” said Rod Tucker, the organization’s vice president of publications. “The Photonics Society is delighted that Selim has agreed to take the helm of the IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics.”
