Accolade follows School’s #2 global ranking in IT by Financial Times

Boston University School of Management’s N. Venkatraman, the David J. McGrath, Jr. Professor in Management, Information Systems Department, has been identified as the 22nd most-cited scholar in management across the world. This finding was published in the August 2008 Journal of Management’s paper "Scholarly Influence in the Field of Management: A Bibliometric Analysis of the Determinants of University and Author Impact in the Management Literature in the Past Quarter Century," by Philip M. Podsakoff, Scott B. MacKenzie, Nathan P. Podsakoff, and Daniel G. Bachrach.

The paper is devoted to identifying "the universities and research scholars who have had the greatest impact on the study and practice of management during the past quarter century."  An integral part of this study of giants in the field, is a list of the 150 most-cited academics in management.

Prof. Venkatraman’s rank at #22 on this global list is significant not only in its indication of his incredible influence within management, but also because all the researchers above him in this ranking are senior to him in both age and experience.  Moreover, the only other researcher from a New England school identified as more highly cited was Harvard Business School’s famed Michael Porter, who placed #20.

MIT Sloan’s Berger Wernerfelt is the next area scholar on the list, ranked at #38.

Professor Venkatraman’s research spans across topics such as the Concept of "Fit" in Strategic Management (article) to Winning in the Network Era (video), to Leveraging information technology for transforming organizations (abstract).  He currently teaches the courses Mastering IT Strategy and Emerging Perspectives and Synthesis, both in the School’s Information Systems department, recently ranked #2 in the world in IT by the Financial Times.
