Mark Allan, Faculty Director of Boston University School of Management’s  Health Sector Management (HSM) Program, presented a panel at today’s 2008 annual meeting of The Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA).  Allan was invited by AUPHA’s president to organize the panel  and present his talk on “Teaching Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Health Sector,” based on an article Allan published this winter in the Boston Business Journal, “Tomorrow’s Health Care Leaders Require Support Today.”

The panel explored the curricular innovations and program successes at three of the country’s preeminent programs in management across the health sector, as well as how to best equip students for entrepreneurial success within the industry.

Joining Professor Allan on the panel were Lawton Robert Burns, Chair, Health Care Systems Department, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania; and Joel Shalowitz, Professor and Director, Health Industry Management, Kellogg School of Management , Northwestern University.

U.S. News & World Report ranks Boston University School of Management’s MBA Program in Health Sector Management 17th among health care administration programs, while Wharton’s and Kellogg’s programs are also highly acclaimed.

Allan’s presentation explored the rapid rise of enrollment in BU’s HSM program the last few years and explained the key curricular, and extra-curricular, developments underlying this growth.  “We recreated the program to be compelling and relevant,” Allan told panel attendees, stressing the program’s:

  • curricular expansion to cover issues across “the entire health sector, including bio-pharma and medical devices, as well as service delivery”
  • flexibility, providing education tailored to the needs and interests of each student.
  • focus on innovation, adding value within the sector, and providing graduates with the tools to “make a difference” in the industry
    internships with an emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship
  • partnerships with research centers and programs focused on entrepreneurship in the health sector, such as BU’s Institute for Technology Entrepreneurship and Commercialization (ITEC)
