CHICAGO, IL  - Winston & Strawn LLP announced today partner Daniel Rubinstein has been selected by the Judges of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois to receive the 2013 Award for Excellence in Pro Bono Service. Mr. Rubinstein will be recognized during the Fourteenth Annual Excellence in Pro Bono and Public Interest Service Award Ceremony on May 23, 2013. The Award for Excellence is presented to attorneys who have provided outstanding pro bono representation.

Greg McConnell, Winston & Strawn’s Pro Bono Counsel, commented that in his 11 years at Winston & Strawn he has not experienced any attorney taking on the responsibility to the Court as Dan Rubinstein has. “Dan’s focused commitment to these clients and to the Court, particularly in a time of professional transition to the firm, has been extraordinary,” said Mr. McConnell.

Within months of joining Winston & Strawn as a partner in February 2012, Mr. Rubinstein accepted five different pro bono appointments, including two civil cases and three criminal defense cases, all in the Northern District of Illinois. His work on behalf of Ana Lissette Rodas Juarez in a demanding case (Hague Convention of 25 October 1980 on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction) that led to a successful settlement after trial also earned him a nomination for the Award of Excellence from Judge Amy St. Eve.

In May 2012, Dan was appointed to represent Ms. Juarez, a citizen of Guatemala and legal resident of the United States, in connection with a petition filed under the Hague Convention.  The Winston & Strawn team led by Mr. Rubinstein billed almost 1,000 hours within only a few months time on the case. Mr. Rubinstein actively participated at trial while also mentoring the Winston & Strawn associates who handled various parts of the proceeding. He devised the settlement strategy and led the negotiations, all while upholding the highest expectations the court has established for counsel, appointed or compensated.

Mr. Rubinstein was also appointed by the court in 2012 to represent an inmate at Cook County Jail in a civil rights matter. Additionally, he serves as a volunteer member of the federal defender panel and was appointed as defense counsel in three criminal matters in 2012, one of which led to a successful result due to his sentencing advocacy. The other two matters are still pending.

“It is a great honor to receive this award and to be able to make a positive impact on the community and be of service to the court,” Mr. Rubinstein said. “Winston & Strawn has a strong culture of pro bono service, and I am thankful to be part of it.”
