Information for Alumni in Public Service Employment

02.21.12

On January 31, 2012, the Department of Education released the "Employment Certification for Public Service Loan Forgiveness" form and a process to help borrowers monitor their progress toward qualifying for Public Service Loan Forgiveness.

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program was created to encourage individuals to enter and continue to work full-time in public service jobs.  Under this program, borrowers may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance due on eligible federal student loans after making 120 qualifying payments on loans while employed in public service.  Only payments made after October 2007 qualify.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness requires that students borrow Federal Direct Loans or consolidate their loans through the Federal Direct Consolidation Program.  Alumni who have consolidated or borrowed their federal loans through other lenders may want to consider a Direct Consolidation Loan.  Alumni who have consolidated away from the Direct Loan Program are allowed to reconsolidate their loans bank into Direct Loans to take advantage of this opition.
