Movie Night with the BU Brazilian Association

The Brazilian movie "Carandiru" presents the story of a doctor who is doing AIDS prevention at the Carandiru prison in Sao Paulo, the largest prison in Brazil. There, he finds that the prison is extremely over populated, with both and the prisoners live in terrible conditions. Those conditions lead the prisoners to revolt and the police officers slaughter hundreds of people. The movie follows the stories of some of the prisoners who lived through this tragedy; the most notorious one is Lady Di, portrayed by Rodrigo Santoro (known for his role as Paulo in the TV show LOST and his part as King Xerxes in the movie 300).

Democracy Matters presents "The Big Bay"

Free screening of "The Big Bay: Tom Delay's Stolen Congress."

Film presents the story of one of the most blatant power grabs in American history: how a District Attorney in Texas turned out to be the biggest threat to the national DeLay Machine. The film is a warning about how easy it is for American democracy to be hijacked by a combination of relentless ambition and corporate millions. It makes the case that DeLay built a "custom-made Congress" that is still providing votes for his agenda.

The Seth family reside in Canada. While Mr. Seth has passed away, his mom is still alive, living with her daughter-in-law, her son, Rahul, and daughter, Twinky. Before the marriage does take place, Kimberly passes away in an airplane accident, leaving Rahul heart-broken. When his mom and grandma impress upon to get married to another girl, especially of Indian and Hindu origin, he refuses. Then both of them lay the ultimatum to him - get married or Twinky's marriage will be canceled. A desperate Rahul hires a gorgeous escort, Sue, of seemingly Hispanic origin, convinces his elders that she is India, a Hindu, and definitely the girl he is going to marry. As preparations get way for Twinky's marriage, Rahul is going to be finding out that Sue is not who she claims to be - and may have a separate agenda of her own.

Films will be screened at the Geddes Center on the fifth floor of CAS and will be subtitled in English.

The story focuses on Lisa (Yukiko Okamoto), a Japanese-American teenager on her way to New York to start a new life. Before catching her flight, she spends the day in Tokyo to make some extra money. Thin, plain and endearingly earnest Lisa seems like an unlikely prostitute. But apparently, a booming market exists for fresh-faced girls in Japan, and one walk through a crowded street reveals the earning potential a girl holds with her seeming innocence. "Bounce KO Gals" is fraught with potential violence and the sordid reality of the girl's business, which is never confronted head-on.
