Champagne: A Global History with Becky Sue Epstein

Champagne, sparkling wine, fizz, bubbly--whatever it is, we like it! From the pop of a cork to the smash of a bottle on the side of a new ship, champagne signals celebration, fun, and camaraderie. Bubbly, as we affectionately call it, is a symbol of luxury--and the preferred drink for any important toast. Becky Sue Epstein is an award-winning journalist and an experienced editor, broadcaster, and consultant in wine, spirits, food, and travel. Her new book, Champagne: A Global History, reveals the origins of the world's great sparkling wines, telling the stories of those who made champagne famous, from Dom Perignon to Veuve Clicquot, and describing the evolution of the sparkling wines of other regions that are now so popular. Epstein writes on wine and spirits for numerous online and print publications. Each participant will receive a copy of Epstein's book

IS&T SCV Tutorial - Graphics Programming in C/C++: OpenGL

OpenGL (Open Graphics Library) is a software interface to graphics hardware. The interface consists of over 250 different function calls which can be used to draw complex two and three-dimensional scenes from simple geometric primitives such as points, lines, and polygons. There are also routines for rendering the scenes with control over lighting, object surface properties, transparency, anti-aliasing and texture mapping. OpenGL is designed as a streamlined, hardware-independent interface to be implemented on many different graphics hardware platforms. It is the most widely used, supported, and best documented 2D/3D graphics API.

This hands-on tutorial will give an introduction to graphics programming using OpenGL, We will cover the basics of: interfacing with the windowing system, color, lighting, surface properties, texture mapping, and transforms.

If you try to sign up for this tutorial and find that it is full, please send email to scv-tutorial@bu.edu and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Organized by MoMA PS1 in collaboration with Performa, this exhibition is an essential introduction to performance art. With over 200 works including film and audio, 100 Years is intended as an archive of a largely unknown history for students, scholars, and enthusiasts. The timeline begins with 1909's Futurist Manifesto and continues to the present, with the addition of programming that highlights Boston's own contribution to performance.
Willard Traub: Recovery

Willard Traub: Recovery

February 9 -- March 24, 2012

Recovery is a photographic meditation on affliction and rehabilitation by Willard Traub. The work reflects the artist's own experiences battling a rare form of blood cancer, drawing on the strength of his talents as a photographer. Recovery began when Traub was diagnosed with cancer in 2005, and examines his treatment, hospitalization, and recovery process. The images, combined with personal prose and poetry, provide an intimate and hopeful commentary on a disease that signifies much larger life issues.

Willard Traub is a Massachusetts based photographer whose interests range from the commercial photography of architecture to teaching to fine art photography. Recipient of numerous grants and awards, including a Photography Fellowship from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and a Polaroid Foundation Grant, his work is represented in private, museum and corporate collections, both nationally and abroad.

IS&T SCV Tutorial - Graphics Programming in C/C++: OpenSceneGraph

OpenSceneGraph (OSG) is a well-established open source scene graph toolkit supporting high-performance 3D graphics, used by application developers in fields such as visual simulation, games, virtual reality, scientific visualization and modeling. Written entirely in Standard C++ and OpenGL, it runs on a variety of operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, IRIX, Solaris and FreeBSD. It supports large databases, particle effects, shadows, texture map font rendering, bulk culling and many other advanced rendering functionalities.

This tutorial will present a hands-on introduction to OpenSceneGraph. We will learn how to draw basic geometric objects, load a scene from a file, manage the scene with transformations and apply various rendering effects.

If you try to sign up for this tutorial and find that it is full, please send email to scv-tutorial@bu.edu and we will do our best to accommodate you.
