REACH: Summer Outreach Teen Dance Program

REACH, the Summer Outreach/Teen Apprenticeship Dance Program, is a program for teens ages 14-18. Sessions meet on weekdays, July 7-18, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and July 21-August 1, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Auditions are by appointment; rolling registration on a space available basis.

The Wolloch Haggadah: Lithographs

The Haggadah is the Jewish book of ritual read at the Passover seder to tell the story of the miraculous biblical events of the Exodus from Egypt. Commissioned by Zygfryd B. and Helene Wolloch in memory of their parents, this edition of the Haggadah juxtaposes some of the themes of the Exodus story with aspects of the Holocaust. The artists, illustrator David Wander and calligrapher Yonah Weinreb, find special commonality with slavery, violence, and redemption. Wander depicts crematoria, burning books, and the Star of David interspersed in the traditional Hebrew text of the Haggadah. He also includes beautiful borders, flowers, and the Israeli flag to symbolize the coming freedom of the Jewish people. The drawings contain no human figures, signifying the absence of those who perished during the Holocaust. This hand-printed portfolio of lithographs consists of 55 prints signed and numbered by the artist, 36 of which are on display, and can be read in order from right to left. Simple, yet direct, the imagery resonates with beauty and truth in its efforts to emphasize connection. A gift of Helene Wolloch and Andrea Eisinger Leeds (CAS’72) and family to Boston University Hillel’s permanent collection. Sponsored by the Jewish Cultural Endowment at Boston University.

Boston Young Contemporaries Annual Exhibition

The 808 Gallery opens its doors to exhibit the fresh face of Boston contemporary art. The third annual juried Boston Young Contemporaries Exhibition (BYC) represents eleven New England Master of Fine Arts and Post-Baccalaureate programs. This year's show includes over 90 emerging East Coast artists and encompasses a variety of contemporary painting, photography, video, and sculpture. A total of 159 works will be on display through August 22.

Summer Recreational Sailing

The Sailing Pavilion is available for experienced sailors during recreational sailing hours by purchasing a Boston University Sailing Card. The Sailing Card is valid for one academic year or the summer session. Sailing Cards can be purchased at PERD, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. No sailing May 24-26 and July 4-7. The Boating Swim Test is required for participation in all Rowing and Sailing. Only the BU Boating Swim Test administered by a lifeguard at the FRC Competition Pool is accepted. The swim test may be taken during any recreational swim. Call the Front Desk at 617-358-3740 for pool hours. Present a picture ID to a BU Lifeguard prior to beginning the test.

BU Red Sox Green Team

Boston University is a part of the Boston Red Sox Green Team program, sending students to Fenway Park on certain game days to help with their newest recycling promotions. Green Team volunteers report to the park 1 1/2 hours before an assigned game begins to promote the recycling program sponsored by Poland Spring. During the game, volunteers walk up and down the aisles between innings to collect recyclable containers. Volunteers complete their duties in the 8th inning, and are free to watch the remainder of the game from a designated area (even if it goes into extra innings). Green Team members will be given a t-shirt and hat to wear during the game, as well as a coupon for a meal from the concession stands. Sign-up online to volunteer.

Image Theater presents Kerouac's Last Call

Playwright Patrick Fenton, a freelance writer from Massapequa, NY, has always been a keen observer of Mr. Kerouac's Long Island days. Kerouac's Last Call recalls a party held at a friend's home in Northport, NY in 1964, just before the writer's move to Florida with his mother. It is based on an actual reel-to-reel tape recording of that night recorded by neighborhood friends. It depicts Jack at the end of his road, with glimpses of the forces that drove him, the people who moved him, and his own strong opinions on fame, his travels, and the new generations of readers who idolized him. Populating the play are characters from his past and present, and the play is filled with the music that accompanied his travels across America. The words are reminiscent of Kerouac's own writings, and the play has been work-shopped with the aid of the Cultural Organization Of Lowell. The play is directed by Ann Garvin.
