Talk on "The Union of Their Dreams"

The American Constitutional Society (ACS) together with the Department of Journalism and the Latin American Studies Program host a Book Talk on "The Union of Their Dreams" followed by a reception.

Interested in labor law, civil rights, or journalism? Several organizations across BU are coming together to host the author of the book, "Union of the Their Dreams, about the United Farm Workers Union." Miriam Pawel is an award-winning reporter and editor who spent twenty-five years working for Newsday and the Los Angeles Times. The book is a great account of what inspired diverse people to join a fight to secure dignity and fair contracts for farm workers and how they succeeded. It's told through the stories of eight activists, among them Jerry Cohen, who was the head of the UFW legal team. She will discuss her new work, which examines the roles of religion and the law as organizing tools and uncovers the history behind the legend of Cesar Chavez and the UFW. Specifically, she will address the role of lawyers in the successes of the UFW, as well as the tensions over legal strategy and the status of lawyers in the movement.
