Summary

Cartoonists & Illustrators - with Prof. Alston Purvis, CFA - Graphic Design & Perry Barton, Exhibitions Coordinator - HGARC

Description

Join the staff of the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center for a tour of an exhibition featuring a sampling of the Centers holdings in the fields of illustration, comic strip art, and cartoons - political and otherwise. You say youve never heard of Frederick Oppers Happy Hooligan? Well, who can blame you. Little Orphan Annie never sang a note until 1977, but she was one of the earliest comic strip characters to jump on the merchandising bandwagon. We will also be looking at original panels from Dennis the Menace, Lil Abner, and Pulitzer Prize winning political cartoonist Paul Szep, to name a few more. The evening will also include original examples from Dickens illustrators George Cuikshank and John Leech; as well as Constantin Alajalov (The New Yorker); E. Simms Campbell (Esquire) and Elton Fax. Come explore and experience a broad range of uniquely rare material from our humorous past. *With Prof. Alston Purvis, CFA - Graphic Design & Perry Barton, Exhibitions Coordinator - HGARC*
