When Loung Ung was five years old, Khmer Rouge soldiers stormed into her home city of Phnom Penh, Cambodia and killed over a quarter of the population, including her parents. Ung, orphaned and separated from her siblings, was trained as a child solider in Khmer Rouge's four year reign of terror. Eventually, she escaped to Thailand and lived for months in a refugee camp before relocating to the United States.
Ung's memoir of this harrowing time, "First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers," was turned into a Netflix movie in 2017, directed by Angelina Jolie.
It is being screened for free in anticipation of Loung Ung's lecture as part of the Elie Wiesel Memorial Lecture Series at Boston University. The lecture will take place the next day, Monday, November 18, at 7:30 p.m. in BU's Tsai Performance Center.
