ME Department Seminar: Eric Suuberg (Brown University)

Another Reason to not to Build Your House Upon Sand.... A Discussion of the Unseen Risks Associated with Vapor Intrusion -- Just like radon, chemicals of anthropogenic origin can migrate from soil into houses, invisibly, over time, impacting negatively residents’ health. The US EPA has endeavored, for a decade, to provide guidance on this ubiquitous vapor intrusion (VI) hazard, (e.g., originating from dry cleaners, gas stations, military bases, metal processing firms). Research at Brown has applied modern finite element CFD modeling tools to understanding the soil gas migration problem, and used these to develop simple analytical approaches to estimating the hazard. Field practitioners seek simple analytic expressions that can describe complex field data, that often seem to defy simple explanation.
