In Situ Lithiation Mechanics of Silicon and Beyond: The global energy challenge has motivated great efforts to the development of rechargeable batteries that are not only of high energy and high power, but also chemo-mechanically reliable. In this talk, in-situ transmission microscopy study and atomistically informed front-tracking modeling will be introduced to identify the electrochemically driven degradation mechanisms of nano-electrodes in lithium ion batteries (LIBs). A set of in-situ electrochemomechanical phenomena will be exemplified, which manifest the strong interplay between electrochemistry, materials, and mechanics in dictating the degradation of nanoelectrodes. The findings offer fundamental guidance toward rational design of failure resistant high-performance LIBs.
