High-Speed Wireless Networking Using Indoor LED Lighting With Hany Elgala Senior Postdoctoral Associate Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, Boston University Faculty Host: Thomas Little Refreshments will be served outside Room 339 at 3:45 p.m. Abstract: The radio spectrum is a finite resource and existing RF wireless technologies suffer from the spectrum scarcity. However, focusing on spectrum alone to grow capacity is limited and unlikely to solve the expected network congestion. Approaches to add capacity including spectrally efficient modulation, multiple antennas and heterogeneous networks (Hetnets) are considered. Visible light communications (VLC) technology using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) is an emerging technology that uses the existing lighting infrastructure to allow data communication combined with illumination. VLC has the potential for being an attractive complementary to realize indoor gigabit wireless access and to off-load data from existing cellular networks and Wi-Fi. In this talk, we highlight the potential applications of VLC, give an overview on the current status of research, and discuss the emerging research challenges. We will also introduce our proposed solutions based on orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation and multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) techniques to address the challenges of incorporating broadband VLC with industry-compatible lighting state control. About the Speaker: Hany Elgala is a Senior Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Boston University. He is a member of the Multimedia Communications Lab (MCL) and the NSF Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center (ERC). From 2010-12, he was the co-leader of the Cellular and Wireless Communications (CWC) Lab at Jacobs University in Germany. There, he coordinated two industrial projects with Airbus Germany and the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company (EADS) to realize high-speed optical wireless networks in airplane cabins. Hany received the B.Sc. in Electronics and Communications from Ain-Shams University in 2000, the M.Sc. in Microsystems Engineering from Furtwangen University in 2003, and Ph.D. in Optical Wireless Communications from Jacobs University in 2010. He is the author or co-author of approximately 25 publications in the area of optical wireless communications. His research focuses on wireless communications and networking, visible light communications, OFDM systems and MIMO transmission.
