This dissertation studies light with nonzero orbital angular momentum (OAM) in a special class of fibers. The presented results demonstrate OAM states to be long lived over a kilometer length of fiber. Data transmission experiments using these states indicate that OAM could be considered an additional degree of freedom for data multiplexing in future optical fiber communication links.
