Acoustic imaging techniques remain the most successful probe for imaging oil reservoirs; however, they lack sufficient contrast to distinguish between reservoir fluids. One method to overcome this limitation is to enhance the contrast of a fluid through the addition of shell-stabilized micron-sized gas bubbles. Microfluidics enables the controlled assembly of bubbles stabilized by different types of shell materials; this enables the design of bubbles that withstand the harsh environmental conditions typically found in oil reservoirs. This creates new opportunities to design highly-complex ‘smart’ bubbles to improve acoustic imaging in oil reservoirs.
