A German Bible for Jewish Women? Lecture by Abigail Gillman

Summary

A German Bible for Jewish Women? Lecture by Abigail Gillman

Description

20th century social activist and feminist Bertha Pappenheim translated a trio of Yiddish Bibles for women. Associate Professor Abigail Gillman of Boston University argues that Pappenheim's project not only merits inclusion in the tradition of German Jewish Bible translation, it provokes us to reconsider the tradition as a whole, in particular with regard to the place of the female reader and the relevance of Yiddish language Bibles.
