Of all the 19th-Century Russian composers, Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky revealed the deepest vision for the style of the future. His reward for this extraordinary creativity was to be despised and denigrated by his friends, who further compounded the compliment by recomposing Mussorgsky's pieces after his early death.
