Film Screening: Yamato

Summary

Film Screening: Yamato

Description

Professor Suzanne O'Brien of the Department of History in the College of Arts & Sciences will introduce and show the Japanese film "Yamato." The IJN Yamato was the largest battleship ever floated. Its huge 18-inch guns outranged every other warship in the world, while its name bore reverential meaning in Japan. The Yamato famously made a 'suicide' sortie in April 1945. Nearly 400 U.S. carrier aircraft intercepted the Yamato squadron on April 7, 1945, as it steamed at high speed toward a final battle with the U.S. Navy off Okinawa. Yamato was struck repeatedly by bombs and torpedoes. Only 269 men survived out of a crew of 3,332. This film recounts the lives and deaths of some of those men. Professor O'Brien will answer questions after the film.
