William R. Keylor, Director of the IHI and Professor of History, will introduce Part II of "Le Chagrin et la pitié ("The Sorrow and the Pity"), an extraordinary documentary film by Marcel Ophüls about Vichy and the French Resistance during World War II. Released into cinemas in 1971, the film was actually made for French television but not shown over that medium until 1981 because of objections to its bleak portrait of France during the German occupation of 1940-1944. "Le Chagrin et la piti” certainly numbers among the most important historical documentaries ever produced. Shown in its entirely over two consecutive nights, each showing will be followed by a discussion led by Professor Keylor.
