The first Discoveries Lecture of the 2009 academic year focuses on solutions for the health-care crisis. The BU panelists sharing their insights are Gary Young, chair of the department of health policy and management at the School of Public Health, Arlene Ash, a School of Medicine research professor of medicine and public health, and Stephen Davidson, a School of Management professor of business, policy, and law. Randall Ellis, a College of Arts & Sciences professor of economics moderates.
The speakers agree that the U.S. health-care system is broken and that solutions must help it to run more efficiently and at lower costs. One way to do this is to offer incentives to physicians and hospitals to provide quality care and prevent unnecessary and costly hospital visits and readmissions. Panelists also suggest that a more efficient system would include much more collaboration among physicians who are treating the same patient.
