A lecture in the six-part series “Getting to Know the European Union: Member States in Focus” presents Wolfgang Renezeder, the Austrian Embassy’s director of the press and information service. The event is moderated by Alan Berger, senior editorial writer for the Boston Globe. The series, organized by the Institute for Human Sciences at Boston University and funded by the European Union Delegation of the European Commission to the USA in Washington, D.C., addresses the European Union and its politics and institutions as they function on an individual country level.
Renezeder argues that when Austria joined the European Union in 1995, the move led to a rise in economic growth, foreign investments, and import-exports, but few significant political changes. He discusses the several ways that EU subsidies have helped Austria’s agricultural development, how joining the EU influenced immigration, and he offers his ideas about the future of the European Union.
Answering questions from the audience, Renezeder discusses a range of topics, including the enlargement of the European Union, the sanctions placed on the right-wing Austrian government by EU members in 2000, and the “European vision.” He says that the EU hopes to develop closer ties with countries such as Russia and the Ukraine through its European Neighborhood Policy, rather than through enlargement.
Renezeder concludes by discussing Europe’s transatlantic partnership with the U.S. and how EU member states can work together for issues like peace-keeping and climate change.
