Scope

The Sonia Sanchez collection consists of photographs, correspondence, printed material, personal memorabilia, and other items.

Photographs in the collection primarily consist of images of Sanchez giving readings of her work, attending conferences, or at other public events.  The images date from 1968 to 2005, and include images of Arthur P. Davis, Toni Morrison, and Susan Sarandon.

Correspondence in the collection dates from 1994 to 2007, and includes personal and professional letters.  Included are a letter from poet Afaa Michael Weaver and an invitation to the inauguration of Haitian President Jean Bertrand Aristide (1990).

Printed material in the collection includes various literary magazines with published work by Sanchez, a poster advertising one of her readings, newspaper and magazine clippings regarding her and her writings, and other items.

Personal memorabilia in the collection includes certificates, plaques, awards, buttons, and other items, including a Certificate of Recognition from the U.S. House of Representatives (1996) and the Robert Frost Medal (2000).

Other items include a manuscript fragment and two audio compact discs.
