Dr. Bachman completed her Doctorate in Demography and International Health at the Harvard School of Public Health, where her thesis work focused on early child health and subsequent morbidity and mortality in a rural area of The Gambia. Over the past ten years, Mary has worked on a variety of health and development projects throughout sub-Saharan Africa, with a particular focus on francophone West Africa. At the CIHD, she is currently overseeing a NIH-funded longitudinal study of orphan welfare in the Ladysmith Region of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. Her interest areas include: demography, infectious disease epidemiology, maternal and child health, the socioeconomic impact of HIV/AIDS, and nutrition in developing countries.
