The John N. Findlay Award
John Findlay, a Borden Parker Bowne Professor of Philosophy at Boston University,
died at the age of eighty-three in the fall of 1987. He was known as being an
imaginative and comprehensive philosopher in an era that seemed dedicated to
restricting the scope and depth of philosophical investigation. Professor Findlay
was born in Pretoria, South Africa, in 1903. Educated at Transvaal University
College there, he then went to Oxford as a Rhodes scholar, and later to the University
of Graz in Austria where he obtained his doctorate in 1933. He taught in South
Africa, New Zealand, and England. When he came to the United States, he taught
at Texas University and Yale University. In 1972, Professor Findlay came
to Boston University where he spent the rest of his career. Professor Findlay
believed that modern philosophy had evaded its responsibility to explore the
relationship between human behavior and moral values. Not only did he aim to
explore and master every major current in American or European philosophy, he
also explored Indian, Japanese, and Chinese thought.
