COnfiguring your PC to use the BU wireless network
To connect your Windows PC to the Boston University wireless network, you need to complete two steps.
1. Connect to Boston University’s 123 wireless network
- To configure use of BU's 123 wireless network, go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Connect to a network.
- Click on Set up a connection or network.
- If it is not selected by default, pull down the menu to either Show All or Wireless to display the available wireless networks.
- Select the 123 Unsecured network and click on Connect.
- Once the connection is successful, you will have an opportunity to save it for future use, which you should do.
- Next time you want to connect you then just go to Start -> Settings -> Network Connections and launch the 123 wireless connection. However, in order to use the wireless network at BU you still need to authenticate with the VPN...
2. Install and configure Cisco VPN software to encrypt your wireless traffic
The Cisco VPN Client is available as a free download from the Personal Computing Support Center’s Web site at www.bu.edu/pcsc/vpn.
You cannot establish a connection on the University's wireless network without encryption, and only the Cisco VPN software will work. Microsoft's VPN software cannot be used with our wireless network. The Cisco VPN uses your BU login name and Kerberos password for authentication.
