BU Version of Virus Scan 8 — installation and configuration
Will I ever need to adjust the settings in VirusScan 8.0i?
You might need to, if you find that VirusScan is being overly restrictive. There are two different ways that adjustments can be made.
1. Adjustments made via the Windows XP firewall
If you are running the Windows XP firewall, then when you try to run a program excluded by VirusScan (for example, an IRC client), you may get a Windows message asking if you want to allow this program. If you do, choose Allow and the Windows Firewall will take care of it.
2. Adjustments you make yourself
If you think that a setting in VirusScan might be giving you trouble, you can open the VirusScan console and adjust the setting, as described below.
- Right-click on the VirusScan icon in your task bar.

- Choose VirusScan Console from the pop-up menu.

- The VirusScan Console window opens. Now double-click on the option
you want to adjust. In the window below, we choose Access Protection.

- You will now see a window that shows the specific rules in that category.
Here we are going to look at the rule to prevent mass-mailing worms
from sending mail. Select the rule, and click Edit.

- You can add a program to the excluded list at the bottom of this
edit window, so that the rule will not apply to that program. For example,
you will see netscape.exe has been added, and now
Netscape will be able to send mail. Now click OK.
- Click OK again.
- When you have finished making adjustments, close your VirusScan Console window and restart your computer.
