How to scan text with a mac
1) Place the first page of your text on the scanner in the upper left corner, face-down, with the top of the paper against the top of the scanner glass.
2) Click on the icon for OmniPage Pro software.
3) If you don't see a toolbar with an "Auto" button, choose Window-Show Toolbar from the menu. Under most circumstances, the buttons on this toolbar should be set at (going across) "Auto", "Scan Image", "One Column", "Perform OCR" and "Save As". Sometimes previous users have changed these settings, so you may need to change them back. (Note: if the text you are scanning is not just one column, you should choose the appropriate setting.)
4) Click on Auto.
5) In the window that appears, make sure the Advanced button is selected and that you have set the scanning information at B/W Photo and 200 dpi.
6) Click on Preview and wait for the image of your document to appear.
7) Once the preview image has scanned, make sure that the dotted lines completely surround the document. If they don't, drag them with your mouse to resize them. (Note: if the pages you are scanning are all the same size, you should only need to Preview and resize once. You can skip this step 7 when scanning subsequent pages.)
8) Click on Scan and wait for this page to be scanned. You will know it is done when you hear it stop and see the interpreted text to the right. (Don't worry, the final, saved version of your text will be in a slightly different format and easier to read.)
9) Repeat the following steps for each additional page that you need to scan:
- place paper on scanner
- click on Auto
- click on Scan
10) Once you have finished scanning all the pages, click on the Save As button. In the window that appears, click on the Desktop button and give the document a name. If you want to use this file as a Word document on a PC, name it something like "mytext.doc". If you want to use it as a text file, name it something like "mytext.txt", etc. Then use the pull-down Format menu to select the format in which you want this text saved. Most people would probably choose either Microsoft Word or ASCII Text (plus you can always convert from one to the other later.) Then, select the option for "automatically open document after save".
11) Once the .doc or .txt file that you created opens up, scroll through it to make sure that it looks OK.
12) Once you know that you are happy with the resulting document, you can quit out of everything and drag the file's icon to your own disk.
