Configuring PPP (a Modem connection) for Mac OS X

1. To get started, open the System Preferences by clicking the icon in the dock, or by choosing System Preferences from the Apple Menu.

2. Once you are in the System Preferences utility, click on the Network button.

3. In the Network pane of System Preferences, choose Internal Modem or Modem Port from the Configure menu.

4. On the TCP/IP tab of the Network pane, set Configure to Using PPP.

5. Next, determine the appropriate telephone number to dial. The following table lists the most common configurations.

If you are dialing from.

Enter this:

A residence hall

9, *70 1 617 378 1111

A location that has call waiting

*70 1 617 378 1111

A location that requires a "9" to reach an outside line
An off-campus location that does not have call waiting
An on-campus office in the 353 or 358 exchanges

9, 1 617 378 1111
1 617 378 1111
39600

Note that dialing the number in the eleven-digit format will not accrue long distance charges as long as you can normally place calls to metropolitan Boston with no additional fees. If you are unsure, please contact your telephone company first to avoid receiving any undesired charges. If metropolitan Boston is normally a long-distance call for you, then this will also be a long distance call and you might want to consider using a different ISP instead. Boston University does not have a 1-800 number.

6. Once you have determined the appropriate telephone number, enter it on the PPP tab.

7. You should also enter your Boston Univerity Login Name but note that we do not recommend saving your password for security reasons.

8. Next, click the PPP Options. button and ensure that your settings match the following:

9. Click OK and click on the Modem tab to make sure that your modem is selected. If your modem is not listed in the menu, contact the modem manufacturer regarding their support of Mac OS X.

10. Finally, choose Advanced from the Configure Menu. Drag the ports listed to the order you prefer. Mac OS X is designed to try the configurations in the order listed. If you use only a PPP connection with your Macintosh, make sure that Internal Modem is listed first. If you use both PPP and Ethernet, you can place Internal Modem second in the list. What this will do is have Mac OS X attempt to use Ethernet first, and, if it is unavailable, fall back to the modem.

11. When you are done, click the Save button and quit System Preferences.

Using the PPP Connection

Now that it's configured, the PPP connection will be initiated automatically when you launch any of your Internet applications (such as a Web browser or e-mail program). Alternatively, you may manually start a PPP connection by opening Internet Connect, which is found in the Utilities folder.

To open a PPP connection, click the Connect button.

When you are finished with your connection, close it by clicking the Disconnect button.
