campus network Access during summer

Wired (Ethernet) access in residences

  • To access the BU Campus Network via wired Ethernet in a residence, you will need a BU login name or a Desk Key code. Once you have a BU login name or a Desk Key, you will have the authorization you need to register your computer via Ethernet.
  • Note that, in order to use Ethernet, you will also need a standard (RJ45) Ethernet cable which you can purchase from the Information Technology Help Center at 533 Commonwealth Avenue (in Kenmore Square near Bertucci's) or from most computer stores.

Wireless access

Boston University provides wireless access in many locations across campus, including the public areas of most residence halls.

  • If you are a registered BU student, faculty or staff member, wireless access will be available to you, as described at www.bu.edu/pcsc/wireless/.
  • If you are a guest of Conference Services or an Intern/Summer Associate staying in a Boston University residence, your Desk Key allows you to have wireless access, as described at https://netregistrar.bu.edu/guest/. You will need to register at that address even if you have already registered your computer for wired access.
  • If you are attending a conference or other special program that does not include use of a a residence, the sponsor of the program can opt to provide you with Guest Network Access by contacting the Office of Information Technology (617-353-2780). If you are given Guest Network Access, you will be able to register your computer at https://netregistrar.bu.edu/guest/ and access the wireless network for up to one week.
  • Note:
    • Many residence hall rooms do not provide wireless access.
    • Personal wireless access points are prohibited because they interfere with network traffic.
    • After your Guest access expires, you may apply for a renewal at https://netregistrar.bu.edu/guest-admin/.

Conference participants and Interns/Summer Associates

If you are a guest of Conference Services or an Intern/Summer Associate, you will need a Desk Key (a special numeric code). You will be issued that code as described below:

  • If you are a guest of Conference Services and you do not already have your Desk Key code, please contact the Front Desk attendants on duty in your assigned residence hall. Also note that the Office of Conference Services may be reached at 617-353-3520 or www.bu.edu/ocs/.
  • Interns/Summer Associates are guests of the Office of Housing who are not registered students. However, they have been issued a BU ID number that starts with "U". If you are an Intern/Summer Associate, this BU ID number is your Desk Key. If you need assistance, please call Housing at 617-353-3511.

Youth Hostel residents

If you are staying in Myles Standish Hall (610 Beacon Street) this summer, you will have Internet access through pay-for-use kiosks.

Professional Education students, Evergreen students, BU alums, and others

If you fall into one of these groups, or something similar, it is likely that you are not authorized to access the BU network unless the group sponsoring you has told you otherwise (and supplied you with the information you would need to register on the network). Please contact the IT Front Office at 617-353-2780 if you would like to find out more about your own specific account status.

Registered BU summer students (and new faculty or staff)

Registered summer students (and new faculty or staff) who do not already have a BU login name and ACS account may get one at 111 Cummington Street. (Please bring your BU ID.)

Once you do have a BU login name, wireless access will be available to you as described at www.bu.edu/pcsc/wireless/.

If you are living in a BU residence and also wish to use the wired (Ethernet) network, you will need an RJ45 Ethernet cable, and to register your computer at https://netreg.bu.edu.

Note that you will not need to NetReg in non-residence buildings, such as classroom buildings.
