Configuring Ethernet for windows XP
Run
the Connection Wizard
- Go
to Start -> Connect To -> Show All Connections
[If
you don't see a Connect To menu, click here for instructions]
- You
may already see a connection named Local Area Connection. If
so, skip to step 12.
- If
you have no Local Area Connection: On the left side of the screen,
click on Create a New Connection
- You
are now in the New Connection Wizard. Click
Next.
- Choose
Connect to the Internet. Click Next.
- Choose
Set up my connection manually. Click Next.
- Choose
Connect using a broadband connection that is always on.
Click Next.
- For
the name of your ISP, type My room (or something similar).
Click Next.
- Choose
to make the connection available for My Use Only. Click
Next.
- If
this will be your main type of Internet connection, put a check
mark next to Make this the default Internet Connection.
- Make
sure there is a check
mark next to Turn on the Internet
Connection Firewall for this connection. Click
Next. Click Finish.
- Right-click
on Local Area Connection and choose Properties.
- Click
on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Click Properties.
- If
you are in a residence hall or if you are in an office
that uses DHCP, choose "Obtain
an IP address automatically."
- If
you are in an office that uses an assigned (static)
IP, enter your assigned IP, Subnet mask and other information
here. For DNS settings, enter 128.197.253.188 and 128.197.253.126
unless told otherwise by your departmental system administrator.
- Click
OK.
Make
your connection:
- If
Ethernet is active in your room/office, you should get an
automatic connection when you plug the a wire from the Ethernet
card in your computer to the Ethernet port.
- Once
you have an Ethernet connection, you can go ahead and use your
Web browser and e-mail programs and other Internet applications.

If
you need to make changes to your connection
- If
you ever want to make a change to the way this connection is
configured, go to Start -> Connect To ->
Show all Connections. Click once on your connection name
on the right. Then on the left, choose Change Settings for
this Connection.
