Using Telnet or SSH to Access the Pine E-mail Program

Using telnet or ssh software, access the host acs.bu.edu, log in, and enter your password. If you are not sure whether you have telnet or ssh software, or if you have never used it, please visit our SSH and Telnet page. After logging in, you may be asked to give the terminal type, in which case you should enter "vt100" (no quotes) and hit return to proceed.

As you can see from the first section of the text pasted below, you may be asked if you wish to read system messages. Press y to read a message, n to skip a message, or q to postpone reading messages for now. Messages which are longer than one screen are automatically sent to a program called "more". (Press the spacebar in "more" to advance to the next screen.)

After you've exited the system messages, you will see a "%" prompt, which is known as the ACS system prompt. At the %, type "pine" (no quotes) and hit return to launch the Pine application.

If you have never used e-mail on the UNIX system, you will find that Pine is an easy-to-use, menu-driven program. Documentation on using Pine is available from the UNIX Help Desk Web site at www.bu.edu/cc/email/pine/.
