instructions for configuring a desktop e-mail program

This page provides information you will need to configure any desktop e-mail program to read BU e-mail. Please don't forget to review the list of other topics linked from www.bu.edu/pcsc/email/, so you won't miss other useful information.

You will definitely need to know...

  • The mail protocol is IMAP. Please *do not* use the POP mail protocol.
  • The IMAP mail server setting is acs-imap.bu.edu and you should use that with SSL (port 993).
  • The SMTP server is acs-smtp.bu.edu. You should use that with authenticated SSL (port 465) by providing your username in the settings (and password, later, when prompted). Doing so should allow you to send mail using acs-smtp.bu.edu, even when you are not connected to the BU network.
  • The Root folder path (a.k.a. the IMAP server directory) is Mail.

You might also want to know about...

Using Web-based mail. You can use www.bu.edu/webmail or forward mail to an external account, as described at www.bu.edu/pcsc/email/configure/forwarding/.

The LDAP server: for quickly accessing address information is ldap.bu.edu. The Search base is o=Boston University, c=US (and make sure o is the small letter o, not the number 0).

How to switch from POP to IMAP: If you are currently set up to use POP and need to switch to IMAP, the instructions are located at www.bu.edu/pcsc/email/manage/poptoimap.html.
