Microsoft Excel

The PCSC fully supports Microsoft Excel, the spreadsheet component of Microsoft Office. On this page you will find links to the PCSC's Excel tutorial handouts, detailed instructions on using some advanced features of Excel, and links to other helpful resources. We support Excel on both Windows and MacOS.

Excel TUTORIAL HANDOUTS

At the beginning of each semester, the PCSC offers hands-on tutorials for Excel. The handouts for these class can be downloaded and used for independent study, as well.

alternatives to excel

Excel is the spreadsheet supported by the PCSC, so if you want to be assured of local technical support, you probably want to choose Excel.

However, individual staff members at the PCSC have taken a look at the alternatives and we encourage you to try them if you are interested.

  • Calc is part of the free OpenOffice suite, available for Windows or Macintosh (on the Mac you must run it within an X11 window).
  • Numbers 08 ("Spreadsheets the Mac way") is part of iWork 08. As the slogan suggests, it is only available for Macintosh. A free trial downoad is available.

Remember your educational discount!

The educational discount for Microsoft Office (Excel) or for iWork (Calc) is substantial; you can get the educational price at University Computers or your local education store.
