Windows on your Mac: Security Advisory

With the introduction of Intel-based Macintosh computers, it has become possible to run a Windows operating system on your Mac. This can be achieved either via a dual-boot solution using Apple's Boot Camp software, or with a virtual environment such as that achieved with programs like Parallels Desktop and VMWare Fusion.

If you choose to run Windows on your Macintosh computer, it is important to remember:

  • Regardless of whether you run it on a Dell, an HP, an Apple, or an PC from another manufacturer, Windows is subject to the same security problems. Running Windows on a Macintosh is no more or less secure than running it on a computer from Dell, HP, Toshiba or other manufacturer.
  • Because of this, you must be certain that you have Windows anti-virus software installed and follow all normal safety precautions.
  • In certain circumstances, you may be required to separately NetReg your Windows installation and run the BU Virus Scan application before you are able to access the Internet from within the Windows environment.
