Connecting to Active Directory resources using Windows 2000 or Windows XP
- Before you will be able to connect, you must ensure that your
Kerberos password has been synchronized with the Active Directory.
To do this, complete the form on this
page. It will take approximately fifteen minutes for the changes
to take effect. You only need to do this once. You will need to
follow the rest of the steps below each time you wish to connect.
Please note that all slash characters ("\") in the instructions below are back slashes. They are produced by the key above the "Enter" key on standard keyboards. It is critical that you use the correct character because forward slashes ("/") will not work.
- Go to Start Menu and choose Run…
- In the resulting dialog box, type \\servername\share
(replacing both with the appropriate values) and click OK.
You should get the values that you need to enter from the owner
of the resource that you are accessing; this person will most
likely be an instructor if you are a student or a departmental
administrator if you are faculty or staff.

- In the logon box that appears, enter ad\username
(substituting your BU login name for username) and your Kerberos
password. You should then be connected to your share.

Note that if you are connecting from off campus (via cable modem or DSL, for example) that you must use the VPN to establish a connection to Boston University's Campus Network before you do the above steps. Information on installing and using the VPN is available here.
