Connecting to Active Directory resources using Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows ME
- Before you will be able to connect, you must ensure that your
Kerberos password has been synchronized with the Active Directory.
To do this, complete the form on this
page. It will take approximately fifteen minutes for the
changes to take effect. You only need to do this once. You will
need to follow the rest of the steps below each time you wish
to connect.
Please note that all slash characters ("\") in the instructions below are back slashes. They are produced by the key above the "Enter" key on standard keyboards. It is critical that you use the correct character because forward slashes ("/") will not work.
- Download and install ADSetup9x.exe.
- Download and install dsclient_ntlmv2.exe.
- Restart your computer.
-
When your computer starts back up, you will see a domain logon window like the one below. Enter your BU login name and Kerberos password and click OK. If you hit cancel on this window you will not be able to connect to the server.

- Once Windows has loaded, go to Start Menu
and choose Run…
- In the resulting dialog box, type in \\servername\share
(replacing both with the appropriate values) and click OK.
You should then have access to your share. You should get the
values that you need to enter from the owner of the resource
that you are accesing; this person will most likely be an instructor
if you are a student or a departmental administrator if you
are faculty or staff.

Note that if you are connecting from off campus (via cable modem or DSL, for example) that you must use the VPN to establish a connection to Boston University's Campus Network before it will possible for you to connect. Information on installing and using the VPN is available here.
