Courses

Summer students must register for eight semester-hour credits: one course plus the internship.

CAS FR 300 Advanced French Grammar Practicum A review of the principal tools of oral and written French.  This course helps students interact successfully with their colleagues, improve their writing skills, and gain confidence in their French abilities both in and out of the workplace.

CAS LF 342 Paris Aujourd’hui: French society and civilization through the performing arts This course is conceived around theatrical, cinematic, and musical events that mark the cultural calendar in Paris during the summer term. Students studied & attended La Cantatrice Chauve d’Ionesco at Théâtre de la Huchette & Un Air de Famille at Théâtre de Nesles.  Films studied were Intouchables et Gainsbourg.

CAS LF 343 La France a Paris: Paris in Literature Using the city of Paris as a unique text, students read its monuments and buildings and interpret selected texts devoted to the city (fiction, history, politics). The course aims to teach students not only how to engage critically with and interpret textual material, but also how to read and analyze the physical space around them. Authors include Hugo, Baudelaire, Balzac, and Zola. Visits include Montmartre, Notre Dame, the Louvre, and le Musée d’Orsay, as well as famous Parisian neighborhoods.

Cultural Activities

We sponsored the following cultural outings:

  • Picnic next to the Eiffel Tour followed by a scenic boat tour on the Seine
  • Mardi du goût (food tastings every Tuesday), featuring tarte au citron, bonbons Haribo, mimolette, Paris-Brest, pain d’épices, and more!
  • Le Musée du parfum
  • Meals at a crêperie and a falafel restaurant
  • Un fil à la patte (Feydeau) à la Comédie Française
  • One man show by Sebastian Marx: Un new-yorkais à Paris

Students are also each given a Passeport Culturel, which allows them to be reimbursed for up to 100€ worth of cultural activities and excursions in and around Paris.
