The Jewish Boy Dancers of Iran

This presentation examines the history of boy dancers in Iran, starting with the Achamenid Dynasty and ending around WWII. Dr. Houman Sarshar will examine their role in Iranian entertainment over these years, and talk about some of the underlying forces that lead to their disappearance. He will also touch on the history of male homosexuality in Iran, art history, and Qajar photography. Dr. Sarshar received his B.A. in French and English literature from UCLA in 1990 and his Ph.D. in comparative literature from Columbia University in 2000. He is an independent scholar, the co-editor of three volumes of The Contemporary History of Iranian Jews, and a contributing author to the Encyclopædia Iranica and The Encyclopedia of Jews in the Islamic World.
