European Voices: A Reading & Conversation with Czech Writer Magdalena Platzova and Translator Alex Zucker

Magdaléna Platzová is the author of six books, including two novels published in English: Aaron’s Leap, a Lidové Noviny Book of the Year Award finalist, and The Attempt, a Czech Book Award finalist. Her fiction has also appeared in A Public Space and Words Without Borders. Platzová grew up in the Czech Republic, studied in Washington, DC, and England, received her MA in Philosophy at Charles University in Prague, and has taught at New York University’s Gallatin School. She is now a freelance journalist based in Lyon, France.

Alex Zucker is an award-winning translator of Czech literature. He also works in editing and nonprofit communications, and currently serves as co-chair of the PEN America Translation Committee. Alex has three translations out in 2016: Midway Upon the Journey of Our Life by Josef Jedlička (Karolinum Press); Love Letter in Cuneiform by Tomas Zmeskal (Margellos World Republic of Letters at Yale University Press); and The Attempt by Magdaléna Platzová (Bellevue Literary Press).

Moderated by Veronika Tuckerova, a translator and scholar of Czech and German literature and a preceptor in Slavic languages at Harvard University.
