Michael Corgan, Pardee School, Boston University

Michael Corgan, Associate Professor of International Relations at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, presented a paper at the 4th Annual Arctic Circle Conference in Reykjavik, Iceland, held from October 6-9, 2016.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was the keynote speaker at the conference which was attended by nearly 2,000 delegates from 50 countries.

Corgan presented his paper, entitled “The Arctic Climate in the US Political Climate,” as part of a panel on security and big powers. The paper focused on climate change in the Arctic and how it has been virtually unmentioned in political debates, Congress or the current campaign for president of the United States, even though the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff have said climate change stands to be the biggest security issue facing the U.S. over the next five to 10 years.

Corgan’s Iceland and Its Alliances: Security for a Small State (2002) was used as a briefing guide for officers at the NATO headquarters of the Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic. He taught at the University of Iceland in 2001 on a Fulbright fellowship and was invited to return in 2006 and again in 2014. He is a Founding Partner of the Center for Small State Studies at the University. His writings on Nordic security have also been published in Swedish and Icelandic. He is also associated faculty at the University Of Lapland (Rovaneimi, Finland) and a member of the University of the Arctic Thematic Network. You can read more about him here.
