Janetos Gives Remarks at Earth & Environment Convocation

janetosEEconvocationAnthony Janetos, the Director of the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, gave a speech at the Spring 2018 Convocation for the Boston University Department of Earth & Environment on Sunday, May 20. Janetos, who has been a Professor in the department since he joined BU in May 2013, was recently appointed the incoming chair of the department effective July 1, 2018.

In his remarks, Prof. Janetos congratulated the 73 new graduates and offered advice for their future. “Don’t be afraid to try something very different than what you’ve done – prepare yourself to be open to new experiences and new pathways to follow,” He said. “And I say this from the standpoint of someone who started their academic career studying spiders and within 10 years had moved on to satellites, and within another 5 to climate change and what we need to do in response.”

He concluded his remarks by urging the graduates, “Tell the truth. Be polite. Be humble. But also be brave. Stand up for yourself and for those less fortunate. Do well by others, and expect the same in return. Work hard and be smart.”
