Sargent Center: A History of Innovation in Outdoor Education
A Boston University tradition since 1932, Sargent Center for Outdoor
Education began as Sargent Camp, the summer location for Dudley
Sargent’s teacher training program.
It was here in the New Hampshire woods that he developed his
philosophy that shared experiences in a beautiful natural setting— including
a few “mild trials
and tribulations”— fostered not just camaraderie, but “individual
completeness and harmony of development” as well.
Today, nearly 100 years later, Sargent Center continues to be
a center of progressive outdoor education. School children, professionals,
families, volunteer organizations, and college students, and nature
lovers of all types join us year-round for opportunities in outdoor
recreation and experiential learning unique to our 700-acre wooded
setting.
Far from the spartan tents of Dr. Sargent’s days, our guests
now enjoy comfortable
cabins, carefully
prepared meals, and roaring fires in Northern
Lodge. However, his sense of adventure remains.
Our
staff is ready to lead you on the experience of your choice,
such as:
- Teambuilding and
leadership programs
- Outdoor adventures like the high ropes courses or GPS orienteering
- Hiking, skiing, and snowshoeing
- Kayaking and canoeing
- And much more
