Congratulations!
So where do you go from here?
You've undoubtedly spent hours in the lab to get here, but, believe it or not, the easiest part may be behind you. There's a lot of hard work ahead, so the first question you should ask yourself is: "What's in it for me?" Why should you be concerned about intellectual property? Three reasons:
- Protectable intellectual property is essential if you want to see something happen with the results of your research. A company will only invest in developing your ideas if they can protect that investment.
- Intellectual property can bring additional resources into your research enterprise:
- Additional funding via a sponsored research agreement
- Unique materials
- Access to specialized equipment
- Collaborating personnel.
- There is the possibility of personal financial benefit:
- At Boston University, 30% of royalty income is distributed to inventors
- There may be consulting opportunities.
There is a lot of information in this section, but it is only intended as a guide. Technology transfer is a person-to-person activity and there's no substitute for talking about what you've come up with. So, use the menu to the right and read as much (or as little) as you like, and please contact us.
