Ignition Awards

The Office of Technology Development (OTD) has instituted an exciting program to bridge the gap between government funded research in basic science and product development work performed by commercial entities. By enabling researchers to generate commercially relevant data, reach key milestones, or develop a prototype, the Ignition Awards will help bring raw technology to a mature enough state where it can be either licensed or form the basis of a new company.

The awards are not prizes, but are funds to accomplish specific applied research tasks. Typical awards will range from $25,000-$50,000, with a maximum award of $50,000. There is no overhead charge associated with Ignition Awards. These will normally be one-time awards geared toward specific technology milestones. OTD anticipates making six to eight Ignition Awards each year.  See examples of previous recipients.

There will be two requests for proposals each year and awards will be announced during the fall and spring semesters.  OTD, working with a review committee of faculty, senior venture capitalists, industry representatives and entrepreneurs, will select award recipients based on a thorough review that will judge the technical feasibility of the program, and the impact that the technology is likely to make.

We are currently accepting proposals directed toward Healthcare, Communications, Clean Energy and Social Entrepreneurship.  The interdisciplinary review teams will be organized around these market segments.  For additional information on these categories please see the selection criteria.

Once grantees receive their award, OTD will monitor their progress and provide strategic business support to help maximize the IP’s commercial impact.

The faculty member must agree in advance to the terms and conditions of the award. Ignition Award applications and selection criteria provide applicants with further information. For questions, please see the FAQ or contact OTD.
